Inhalt

The values in manuals are not that they provide accurate explanations, but rather that they guide the reader so that they reach accurate understandings.
From a psychological standpoint, the belief that correct explanations will definitely obtain correct understandings is merely a cognitive bias, which should be rejected.
Reader consciousness is essential for producing explanations that lead to proper understanding. This presentation will focus on reader consciousness.
Based on research findings in psychology and educational technology, the following topics will be presented; 1) Cognitive biases: Present in writers, and they bring about decreases in the quality of explanations, 2) Reader consciousness: Methods for activating it and methods for measuring consciousness levels, 3) Empirical research: Introduction of research findings whereby the explanations were improved by being specifically cognizant of the readers.
In this presentation, the attitudes that technical communicators should provide and the things they should do in advance are proposed so that better explanations will be produced.
