This presentation reviews the pivotal role technical communication plays in the context of new ISO standards for artificial intelligence (AI), that is, ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems and ISO/IEC 5392 for knowledge engineering in AI, released in December 2023 and March 2024 respectively. As knowledge bases for AI rely on knowledge acquired not only from domain experts, but also increasingly on information extracted from other knowledge sources through AI, documented technical information is required throughout the AI lifecycle to demonstrate compliance and responsible use, manage risks, and enhance transparency. We will describe AI systems from user and functional views as well as the stakeholder roles of technical communication therein, especially as knowledge service provider and knowledge applier. In particular, we will look at opportunities to leverage these ISO standards as a reference framework to accommodate the growing interest in and increasing use of AI in technical communication as a vital partner in the knowledge ecosystem.
